Protecting What Matters Most.
For almost 100 years, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat has existed alongside one of the world’s most extraordinary natural environments — the ancient Gondwana Rainforests of Lamington National Park.
As a family-owned and operated business, sustainability is not simply part of our story, it is part of our responsibility. From conservation and environmental education to sustainable tourism practices and eco-conscious accommodation design, we are committed to protecting this remarkable landscape for future generations.
A Legacy of Stewardship.
For generations, the O’Reilly family has lived and worked within the Lamington plateau, developing a deep connection to the rainforest and its preservation.
Long before ecotourism became widely recognised, the O’Reilly family were pioneering nature-based experiences that encouraged visitors to appreciate, understand and protect the environment around them.
Today, that commitment continues through sustainable operations, conservation partnerships and immersive guest experiences designed to foster a deeper connection with nature.
Acknowledgement of Country.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which O’Reilly’s stands, and pay our respects to Elders past and present. We recognise the Yugambeh language region, and the Aboriginal family groups connected to this Country, including the Mununjali people of the Kerry Valley and Beaudesert region, and the Wangerriburra people of the Canungra and Coomera River region. We honour their enduring connection to this ancient landscape — known to many as Woonoongoora — and acknowledge the stories, knowledge and care that have shaped and protected this place for generations.
Our Sustainability Pillars.
“We believe tourism should actively contribute to protecting the places people come to experience.”
Honouring the past, protecting what comes next.
Sustainability at O’Reilly’s is deeply connected to our heritage and the remarkable landscape we call home. For generations, our family has shared a close relationship with Lamington National Park, and with that comes a responsibility to care for its stories, character and sense of place. We honour the Traditional Custodians of Country, preserve the history and traditions that have shaped O’Reilly’s, and share these stories with our guests so they can be understood, valued and carried forward for future generations.
Creating meaningful experiences, thoughtfully.
For us, responsible tourism and genuine hospitality go hand in hand. We aim to create memorable guest experiences while making thoughtful choices that reduce our impact and strengthen the communities around us. From supporting local growers, producers and makers to encouraging mindful water use, recycling, reusable bottles and our Green Card housekeeping initiative, sustainability is woven into the guest journey. By making responsible choices simple and rewarding, we invite every visitor to play a part in caring for this special place.
Protecting the rainforest at the heart of everything we do.
Our rainforest home is our greatest responsibility. We are committed to protecting its biodiversity, reducing our environmental footprint and supporting the long-term health of the ecosystems that surround us. Our initiatives span conservation and research, water stewardship, waste reduction, energy efficiency, climate awareness and reducing emissions. Through environmental education and responsible visitor practices, we also encourage our guests to tread lightly and help protect the rainforest — ensuring this extraordinary environment can continue to thrive for generations to come.
How We’re Making a Difference
At O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, sustainability is part of everyday life. Our ECO Certification reflects an ongoing commitment to responsible tourism and the protection of the natural environment that makes this place so special.
Everything we do is shaped by a genuine responsibility to care for the rainforest — protecting its biodiversity, respecting its natural systems and helping preserve this remarkable place for future generations.
The linked ECO Certification logo provides more information about the Ecotourism Australia program and what this accreditation represent.
Guests enjoy fresh mountain spring water sourced from the Lamington Plateau and treated on-site. We encourage mindful water use — from keeping showers shorter to refilling reusable drink bottles at our drinking water stations.
Guests can also choose our Green Card for Service, skipping room cleaning to help reduce water and energy use while receiving a complimentary drink as a thank you. Cheers to a greener stay!
We’re working to reduce waste across the Retreat through thoughtful purchasing, recycling and reducing unnecessary single-use items. Clearly marked rubbish and recycling stations are available throughout the property to make responsible disposal easy.
We ask guests to help by choosing reusable options where possible and placing waste in the correct bins. Every small action helps us reduce landfill and protect our rainforest home.
As part of our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and responding to climate change, guests can choose our Green Card for Service and skip daily room servicing and linen laundering. This helps reduce water use, energy consumption and the emissions associated with cleaning and laundry. As a thank you, each guest receives a complimentary drink voucher. Cheers to a greener stay!
We proudly support local growers, farmers, wineries and artisan producers wherever possible, celebrating seasonal regional ingredients and reducing food miles.
Our off-grid Pat’s Farm Chalets feature sustainable building principles, solar infrastructure and eco-conscious amenities designed to minimise environmental impact while maximising comfort.
Stay Well. Travel Better.
Small choices you can make to ensure a lasting difference.
Caring for the places we visit is something we can all take part in. During your stay at O’Reilly’s and wherever your travels take you next; we encourage a few simple choices that help protect natural environments, support local communities and reduce our collective impact.
Waterwise
Refill rather than replace, keep showers mindful, reuse towels and linen where practical, and switch off lights, heating and air-conditioning when they’re not needed. At O’Reilly’s we encourage you to re-fill your drink bottles from our fresh mountain spring water supply and limit your shower times where possible.
Waste Not
Choose reusable bottles and bags, and avoid unnecessary single-use plastics. Look for certified operators and experiences along your journey, and remember that every choice has the power to support positive change.
Keep it Wild
When visiting or sharing their home, observe wildlife quietly and from a distance. Never feed wildlife or interfere with their behaviour. Keep to designated trails and help protect sensitive vegetation, waterways and wildlife habitats.
Care for Country
Take time to learn about the Custodians of the places you visit, respect cultural protocols and heritage, and remember that every destination has a story that began long before your arrival.
Give Back
Consider leaving more than a passing memory. Donate, pledge your support, or lend your awareness to research programs and conservation initiatives that play an ongoing role in protecting our wilderness areas.
Love Local
When you travel, choosing locally made products, local artists, businesses and operators wherever possible helps support regional communities and keep local industries thriving. We thank you for supporting O’Reilly’s and the Scenic Rim.
