Creativity has a way of revealing the character of a place.
Across the Scenic Rim and surrounding region, artists and makers draw inspiration from rainforest, farmland, native wildlife and the materials found around them. Some work from studios tucked into country towns or mountain communities. Others transform metal, timber, textiles, clay, feathers and native botanicals into pieces designed to be used, admired and remembered.
Their work offers something more meaningful than a conventional souvenir. A handmade vessel, carved feather, locally designed cushion or beautifully worked timber board carries the imagination of its maker—and often a little of the landscape that inspired it.
As you explore the region, you will discover independent studios, community creative spaces and Australian makers worth supporting. You will also encounter a number of artists whose work has found a special home within Pat’s Farm and the O’Reilly’s Gift Shop.
Few artists embody the spirit of creative reinvention quite like Terina Smith.
Terina works with discarded, weathered and overlooked materials, approaching each new object with curiosity and imagination. Reclaimed metal, copper, wire, old machinery components and fallen timber can all become the foundations for sculptural lighting, furniture, garden art and one-of-a-kind decorative pieces.
Her work feels expressive, resourceful and full of personality. Instead of hiding the history of each material, she allows its marks, textures and former life to become part of the finished piece.
Terina’s creativity can be experienced throughout Pat’s Farm, where her recycled artworks and handcrafted bedside lamps bring warmth and individuality to the six off-grid chalets. The lamps are not simply functional additions; they are original pieces of art that help connect the contemporary interiors with the working farm landscape beyond the windows. O’Reilly’s Pat’s Farm booklet specifically celebrates Terina’s recycled creations as part of its commitment to local artisans.
The result feels entirely at home in the setting: refined, imaginative and grounded in the character of the land.
The soft furnishings within Pat’s Farm tell another part of its creative story.
Designed by Jen Robson of e360 Design, the bespoke pillows and throws were commissioned to reflect the distinctive flora and landscape surrounding the chalets. The artistic designs were painted onsite at Pat’s Farm before being manufactured through Jen’s Tamborine Mountain studio.
e360 Design is an interior design studio and gallery offering original artwork, textiles, soft furnishings and furniture, with its range made in Australia. The studio also creates bespoke designs across upholstery, wallpaper and decorative interiors.
At Pat’s Farm, the textiles bring softness, colour and a strong sense of place to the interiors. Their botanical forms and warm tones connect the carefully designed rooms with the hills, grasses and changing light outside.
They demonstrate how thoughtful design can do more than decorate a room. It can interpret a landscape, creating an experience that feels specific to its setting rather than found anywhere else.

At the O’Reilly’s Gift Shop, visitors can discover the intricate work of Mark Cullen, widely known as the O’Reilly’s Bird Man.
Mark’s connection to the mountain’s birdlife extends far beyond his handcrafted feather artworks. He operates O’Reilly’s popular Birds of Prey Show and Wildlife Encounters, sharing his knowledge and close relationship with some of Australia’s most remarkable native species.
More recently, Mark has also introduced O’Reilly’s Photography Workshop, giving guests the opportunity to get up close with the stars of the Birds of Prey Show during an in-depth photography experience. With Mark’s guidance, participants can observe the birds at close range, learn more about their behaviour and capture detailed images that would be difficult to achieve in the wild.
His feather artworks are created from naturally moulted feathers collected from the beautiful birds in his care, including Dez the Eagle, Wanda the Fish Eagle and Twinkle the Owl. Mark carefully cuts and shapes each feather into a distinctive work of art, celebrating the detail, movement and character of the birds themselves.
Guests may spend the morning meeting these remarkable birds before encountering Mark’s work in the Gift Shop. The connection between wildlife, education and artistry encourages visitors to look more closely—at the curve of a wing, the line of a feather and the remarkable patterns found in nature.
Each piece rewards attention. From a distance, the overall image draws you in; up close, the precision, patience and deep appreciation behind the work begin to reveal themselves.
Beautifully Crafted in Timber
Mark’s creativity extends beyond feather art.
He also produces handcrafted timber pieces stocked at the O’Reilly’s Gift Shop, including cutting boards, serving paddles and coasters. Each piece celebrates the warmth, grain and individuality of natural timber, creating objects that are both practical and beautiful.
The designs are carefully engraved into the wood with native birds found on the mountain, from delicate Superb Fairy-wrens through to the striking Regent Bowerbird. In this way, each piece becomes more than a functional item for the kitchen or table—it also pays tribute to the feathered friends that call O’Reilly’s and Lamington National Park home.
No two pieces of timber are exactly alike. Variations in colour, pattern and texture give every board, paddle or coaster its own character, while the engraved birdlife adds a distinctive sense of place.
These pieces feel especially suited to the rhythms of a Scenic Rim escape: picnic lunches, generous grazing boards, family tables and relaxed evenings spent together. They also make enduring gifts—designed to be used, enjoyed and gradually become part of someone’s own story.
